The Dream Before You Came was written entirely on the Chapman Stick during the 1st lockdown.
To deal with the isolation Matthew spent time reacquainting with an instrument he had not played for so long. Armed with lots of time (and some new effect pedals), the potential song ideas coming from the stick seemed endless
It was a new beginning; a different world would emerge from our experience of isolation. The seeds of MJM were being sown and little did we know what lay ahead.
The meeting with John O’Brien created a sonic partnership that yielded real magic from the very start with Dream being one of the very 1st tracks we recorded.
Paul Anderson was to add his own brand of magic and took the track to a new sonic level. Matthew had always felt that the song was a duet as the nature of the lyrics had developed as such.
So, he asked his daughter Olivia if she would sing the song with him. The results created big smiles all round in the studio.
Dream Before You Came has become an extremely introspective song, a father and daughter, in different times of their lives, but locked together eternally in film and music.
The message can be anything you want it to be but one thing is clear, we all know life can be fleeting; hold those you love close and “Catch the moment”.
